Meet Andrew
Andrew Drake has been surfing for over three decades, nearly two of them spent in the Pacific Northwest.
A competitive surfer with a growing list of awards to his name, he picked up stand up paddle boarding as a way to stay in shape and cruise the waterways close to home.
Andrew opened the Washington Surf Academy when Surf Ballard moved to Shilshole, directly across the street from a prime paddle boarding spot. Between giving surf lessons on the coast, he has taken thousands of people out on the Sound and introduced them to the sport.
“It’s a great way to get away from the city — without having to get away from the city,” he says. “You can drive through the hustle and bustle of Seattle, get to Surf Ballard, grab a board and be in your own world paddling around within 5 minutes. It’s a great release in so many ways.”
